Point of technical information: It was Scott Harshbarger, not James Shannon, who was AG at the time and trying to remove John McGonigle from office in concert with Bill Weld.

Margie - Thanks for sharing that. I never met Mr Buckley much to my regret because he certainly seems like he was an interesting guy. I do recall appearing before Judge Buckley in the Lowell District Court (as an attorney, not a defendant) and found her to be just as you describe with an added dose of compassion.

Buckley was a wonderful fellow who went to the floor of the Republican presidential nominating convention to argue for gun control. He was a friend of the late Eliot Richardson and tried to get him nominated for Vice President in Kansas in 1976. His wife, Marie Buckley, was a smart, tough attorney who became a judge when Bill Weld was governor

Good recounting of the Middlesex Sheriffs since 1948. Many times as a kid I heard the Billerica House of Correction under Fitzpatrick called "the country club." The inmates were a bit different in his day. For years Fitzpatrick invited my uncle Fr. Bill Kirwin - Oblate of Mary Immaculate - a pretty good homalist as Oblates are - to conduct an annual retreat for the Billerica inmates. Imagine doing that today?
