Many years ago the people of Lowell called city hall “The Eagle”.
There is a local political urban legend that claims one of our past hyphenated-American mayors caused the City Hall eagle to be turned when he took office so that its rear end faced the neighborhood of a competing ethnic group in the city. I can’t recall if Little Canada or the Irish Acre is the “butt” of this “tale.” One of our readers may know.
