There is a local political urban legend that claims one of our past hyphenated-American mayors caused the City Hall eagle to be turned when he took office so that its rear end faced the neighborhood of a competing ethnic group in the city. I can’t recall if Little Canada or the Irish Acre is the “butt” of this “tale.” One of our readers may know.

Many years ago the people of Lowell called city hall “The Eagle”.
