In the Merrimack Valley: Steward and Saints Medical Center Letter of Intent to Buy

by Marie

The Globe is reporting on BusinessUpdates that Steward Health Care Systems announced this morning that they have a letter of intent to purchase yet another hospital in the Merrimack Valley. Saints Medical Center in Lowell seems to find Steward “a good fit” for the hospital’s  ”mission, vision and values” according to CEO Stephen Guimond.

Steward Health Care System this morning unveiled its second deal in the past four days to acquire an eastern Massachusetts hospital, saying it has a letter of intent to buy Saints Medical Center in Lowell.

Saints is a 157-bed Catholic community hospital formed through the merger of two separate local hospitals in the late 1990s. Under the letter of intent, it will retain its Catholic identity as it affiliates with Steward, which runs six other Catholic hospitals in the state, including St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center and Carney Hospital in Boston…

This news while not a surprise after rumors on the street last week,  will certainly evoke more talk, more contoversy and more editorial comment. Again as with the purchase of the non-profit Caritas Health Care system with six hospitals including Holy Family in Methuen, the deal needs serious vetting by Attorney General Martha Coakley, the Mass Department of Health and Massachusetts State Supreme Court. All are required  to do due diligence on behalf of the community and the stakeholders. Stay tuned.

Obama Kicks Off Campaign

I got this from an article written by Glen Johnson of the Globe. I love the headline “As Republicans wait, Obama kicks off re-election campaign”

The Obama campaign used the two minute video below to start its engine.

Huckabee @ Conference

by Tony

I completely missed this…did you miss it too? It might be because I was never crazy about Mike Huckabee during his run for president.

After being introduced at the Rediscover God in America Conference by David Barton, Huckabee says…

I, I almost wish there could be a simultaneous telecast and all Americans would be forced,…FORCED at gun point no less,…to listen to EVERY David Barton message.

3rd Annual richardhowe.com Community Haiku Project

by PaulM

Okay, who’s counting—I know it’s April 4. The haiku writers got an extension because of the weekend start for National Poetry Month. But here we are. Gentle-people and not so much-ers, start your compositional engines. Send traditional (5-7-5) Japanese-style haiku or looser Western haiku that say a lot in three lines in the vein of Jean Louis Kerouac, late of Lowell, to your haiku editor here at info@loompress.com. We will post one or two daily as the supply lasts. We may throw in a few ringers from the canon on a slow day, but this is really about our readers being the writers. Anyone can write a haiku. Very democratic form. Even our colleagues from across the aisle can write, revise, and not extend but compress their remarks.

Red sky at morning

by DickH

Red sky at morning, sailor take warning . . .

I noticed a red glow around the east-facing window shade of my kitchen earlier this morning, peeked out, and was amazed to see the colorful sky shown above looking back at me. Unfortunately, a morning palette of this variety, at least according to the “sailor” line from the old poem, means it will be a rainy day.
