Osama bin Laden dead

by DickH

While waiting for President Obama to address the nation, all major news outlets are now reporting that the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, Osama bin Laden, is now dead almost ten full years after the attack. Great news!

UPDATE at 11:40 pm, President Obama begins speaking from White House. Thanks “tireless and heroic effort of military”. Says he told CIA to make killing bin Laden nation’s top priority. First learned possibility they found him last August. Last week that was confirmed. Today, a small US team conducted a raid into Pakistan where in a firefight they killed bin Laden and retrieved his body.

Says bin Laden’s demise should be cheered by all across world who value peace and human dignity. Says Pakistan intelligence helped locate OBL.

Says we will be relentless in defense of our citizens and “on nights like tonight we can tell families who lost loved ones that justice has been done.” thanks US military and intel. Asks to think back to sense of unity that prevailed after 9/11.

In the Merrimack Valley: Red-Mass Group Redistricting Suggestions

by Marie

Last week the folks at the Red-Mass Group blog offered some suggestions on how to redistrict three Merrimack Valley/Northern Middlesex State Senate districts. Two of the districts – First Middlesex and Second Essex Middlesex rate a high “leaning Republican” rating from them based on the Brown Coakley race results while the third – the Third Middlesex “leans Democrat” but as configured would pit incumbent Dem Senators Fargo and Eldridge against each other. These senarios are but the tip of the iceberg as the must-do redistricting of the Commonwealth takes shape. What do you think?

Second Essex Middlesex – Senator Finegold (D-Andover) remains the same – Andover, Dracut, Lawrence and Tewksbury.

First Middlesex – Senator Eileen Donoghue (D-Lowell) - Removes Pepperell, Groton and most precincts in the town of Westford while adding the entire town of Chelmsford.

Third Middlesex – Senator Susan Fargo (D-Lincoln) - Loses  Chelmsford, her Lexington precincts, Bedford and adds Maynard, Acton, Sudbury. The town of Acton is the home of  Senator Jamie Eldridge and currently in his Middlesex and Worcester district. A Dem versus Dem face-off would delight the Mass-GOP.
