For the past few years at the registry of deeds we’ve been working on ways to integrate land records such as deeds with GIS technology which shows overhead photos such as on Google Maps. There’s a lot of background work that is and has to be done so it will be a while before there is anything the public can use.

The next phase of this project would be something I call a Deed Wiki. It would be connected to this land record/GIS application but not a direct part of it. The Deed Wiki would allow members of the public to upload or link photos, videos or text about a particular piece of real estate. Over time, you’d create a type of biography for all the houses and buildings in a community. Place would become the anchor of many lifetimes of memories.

This is still just in the thinking stage but maybe during the Mass Memories event, we can all have a conversation about the Deed Wiki concept or just the general idea of an ongoing community-history project that captures images, video, text and data about our’s and our city’s past.
