Who wants to be a state representative?

Nothing like an open House seat to get the political juices flowing. With Kevin Murphy selected to be the next Lowell City Manager last night, he will soon resign as the representative for the Eighteenth Middlesex District. Given the timing of this, I believe there will not be a special election but that the seat will be filled in November’s state election with the primary in September (although the winner will probably be seated immediately after the election rather than waiting until January 2015).

Kevin Murphy was elected to this seat in 1996 when the incumbent representative, Steve Panagiotakos, successfully ran for the First Middlesex Senate seat being vacated by Dan Leahy (the father of current city councilor John Leahy). Kevin won the Democratic primary in a field that included Joe McNamee and Donald Leblanc and then went on to win a tough general election against the very popular Tim Golden, then a ticket-topping member of the Lowell School Committee as well as a Lowell police officer. Murphy has successfully run for reelection every two years since then with only nominal or no opposition.

The Eighteenth Middlesex District consists of Precincts 1 and 2 of Ward 2; all of Ward 3, Precinct 1 of Ward 4; and all of Wards 7 and 8. I assume there will be plenty of candidates. A couple have already taken preliminary steps; others have quietly been spreading the word of their interest. Because I live in this district, I will be especially interested in this campaign and will cover it extensively.

For now, though, here’s a geographic and demographic breakdown of the precincts that make up this district:

I love looking demographics. What does “Age” reflect? Average age of registered voters in that precinct? Or…?
