Notes

  • Raymond Rourke, a longtime state representative elected to his first term on the city council, was elected mayor on the third ballot defeating Samuel Pollard.

  • Rourke hired as his mayoral secretary Marty Meehan, current Fifth District Congressman.

  • Nearly 21,000 residents voted.  The newspaper called it a "strong turnout despite the weather."

  • Preliminary election returns showed that only 12 votes separated Wayne Peters, Edward Kennedy and George Anthes in 8th, 9th and 10th place.

  • On the school committee, newcomer Robert Wolfgang topped the ticket followed by Clement McDonough, Daniel Kane, George O'Hare, William Kirwin and Gerald Durkin.

  • The newspaper stated that the two biggest surprises in the school committee race were the "staggering drop of George Kouloheras" and the failure of former school committee member William Collins to regain a seat.
