Notes

  • B Joseph Tully resigned as city manager in December 1987.  He was replaced by Assistant City Manager James Campbell.

  • Richard Howe was elected to his second term as mayor (1969 being his first).

  • Incumbent Ray Rourke left the council in October 1987.  Edward Kennedy, who had finished 10th in the prior election, filled the balance of Rourke's term, but failed to win re-election in this election.

  • Incumbents Armand LeMay (the father of successful newcomer Curtis LeMay) and Richard O'Malley did not seek re-election.

  • Newcomer Gerald Durkin won a council seat while serving on the school committee.  He did not seek re-election to the school committee.

  • Incumbent school committee member David Allen did not seek re-election to the school committee, but ran for the city council, finishing 20th in the primary election.

  • Both council incumbents who lost, Kathleen Kelley and Gus Coutu, had both served on the school committee before being elected to the city council.

  • Former city councilors Wayne Peters and George Anthes unsuccessfully sought to rejoin the council in this election.

  • On the school committee, newcomers Kathleen Janas, Mary Anna Sullivan and Sean Sullivan (not related) joined incumbents George Kouloheras, Kathryn Stoklosa and Regina Faticanti.

  • School committee incumbent George O'Hare failed to win re-election.
