Notes

  • Incumbent Joe Fitzpatrick did not seek re-election.  He was replaced by Ray Rourke who had previously served four terms on the city council.

  • Kathleen Kelley had finished 10th in the 1987 election, but gained a council seat in mid-term when Brian Martin resigned to become assistant city manager.

  • Jim Campbell was city manager.

  • Richard Howe was elected to a second consecutive term as mayor with votes from Bud Caulfield, Robert Kennedy, Kathleen Kelley, Curtis LeMay, Raymond Rourke and himself.  Tarsy Poulios received votes from Brendan Fleming, Gerald Durkin and himself.

  • On the school committee, new-comers Steve Panagiotakos and Ray Riddick joined incumbents Regina Faticanti, Kathleen Janas, George Kouloheras and Mary Anna Sullivan.

  • School committee incumbents Sean Sullivan and Kathryn Stoklosa failed to win re-election.

  • Voters endorsed English as Lowell's official language by a 3-1 margin despite a front-page Sun editorial urging residents to vote no.
